Dear Darlene,
1. For the Chinese, there is what is known as ancestor worship.
Here, a portrait of a loved one or a tablet (representing the loved one) and a incense or joss stick holder is placed on an altar.
Usually, many of the houses have space constraints and the altar (ancestor worship) is placed in the living room or dinning room.
2. I believe, your situation is not the same as the above. But rather to keep the portraits.
In your case, it is best to keep the portraits on a wall, in a `quiet room' such as the study room.
Perhaps, you can also share with us have large are the portraits and if you have any other rooms that you have thought off.
Alternatively, in the west, it can be hung along the staircase area leading upstairs.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
