Dear Carrie,
1. If one uses the ordinary compass, one should not be concerned about `holding' the compass at the North or South.
What one needs to do is to take a compass reading from the centre-point of the house towards the main door.
One should thus take the compass reading from the compass.
2. Your confusion will arise only if one uses the Chinese Luopan i.e. the compass needle is marked `from South to North' i.e. completely reversed from the ordinary compass.
So the question asked is are you using a Chinese Luopan?
1. If no, there is no longer an issue here.
2. If you are using a Chinese Luopan, make sure you know how to use it first.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
