Dear Anon,
Usually, the "sunken" part or the lower level can be the living room. Quite often, many houses have `split-levels where there are steps leading up to the dining room.
Here, it is acceptable for the living room to be at the lower level. Usually, this lower level is level to the house exterior or slightly raised up.
