24 is actually the 24 directions or mountains under the Flying Star Feng Shui.
Where each sector of the compass i.e. 360 degrees is divided by 15 degree increments which results in 24 directions or mountains.
East/West Group is also known as Eight House and basically, it is finding the house compass direction and `slotting' the house into either North , South, East, West, NE, SE, SW, NW or 8 compass directions.
Under the Flying Star Feng Shui not only is the house Feng Shui if a house is at `North' one must determine which of the North sectors it belongs to.
For example in the Flying Star you have:-
Direction
=========
North 1
North 2
North 3
and each 8 directions of a compass has 3 directions. Where 8 x 3 = 24 directions to choose from.
For example, you can check out the free Flying Star report at http://www.geomancy-online.com.
Here, under the Flying Star Feng Shui an additional variable is the birth chart of the house. You must know when the house was built or when a major renovation has taken place. With this information and the door direction, you can then use the " 24 " that you had mentioned.
If you want to know more about how to take a compass direction to determine the main entrance door then check out:-

If you want to find out more about the Eight House (which is a stepping stone to Flying Star Feng Shui):

In fact, Eight House or " 8 directions " and Flying Star or " 24 directions " are the only TWO compass school Feng Shui.

In Chinese metholodogy, Pillars of Destiny is used here or can be used to determine company logos.
For example, if a person is considered of a water element, the company logo can be e.g. blue in colour and design can be wavy etc...
In my opinion, if one is new to Feng Shui, my suggestion is take your time to digest all the information first.
Warmest Regards,
Cecil
